Course Overview

Is Your Team Ready to Handle a Medical Emergency in Your Dental Office?

Managing patient medical emergencies requires teamwork. This 2-day intensive course takes your learning further with a unique CE program that requires practical application of your knowledge of medical emergencies during simulated patient problems. This course is ideal for anyone who has taken a Medical Emergency course and wants to refresh their skills with a team-based immersion experience.

Other courses tell you what to do in a medical emergency.

In this course, you will practice how to do it.

This course uses:

  • Real patients: Human actors from the Standardized Patient Program at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine – not manikins.
  • Real team members: You are paired with a dental assistant chairside – just like in your office.
  • Real-time delivery of drugs: Practice giving medications using the actual drugs you need to know.

The objective of each scenario: You and a dental assistant must manage a patient medical emergency until help arrives – simulating the exact preparedness expected from you as a health care professional. The course format is designed to improve your confidence with multiple opportunities to practice a variety of dental office emergencies in a team environment. This continuing education experience for dentists is the first of its kind in North America.

You'll be able to:

  • Make mistakes in a safe and confidential environment
  • Learn the "right" answers following the scenarios
  • Work with your teammate to improve efficiency and organization

Transfer classroom learning into clinical preparedness with this challenging hands-on small-group experience for you and your dental assistant team member.

IMPORTANT - Please note:

The Medical Emergencies Simulation Course is part of a research program aimed at understanding the influence of stress on teamwork during the management of medical emergencies. Although you are invited to register in pairs, you will be partnered with one or more different dental assistants to provide a range of teammate experiences. Permission will be sought from all participants for use of their information and performance data. Participation in research is entirely voluntary and the information collected will be kept strictly confidential.
