Course Outline

The development of composite fiber technology has been incorporated into the mainstream of everyday life, from the body panels of jet airplanes, to the structure of the most advanced Formula One race cars. In dentistry we have used cast gold posts, prefabricated metal posts of various configurations, prefabricated ceramic posts, and now fiber technology is becoming more prevalent in posts as well. Is there any real benefit clinically to using fiber bonded systems over the cemented cast post or cemented prefabricated metal or ceramic post? Are there any clinical technique changes or auxiliary instrumentation hints that will drastically increase the performance of fiber posts? This lecture will look at the evolution of posts and concentrate on the benefits of fiber post technology while providing clinical hints on maximizing the potential longevity of this exciting technology.
