Course Overview

The course on small field-of-view cone beam CT (cbCT) is a didactic and clinical hand’s on course that will introduce the participants to the principles of cbCT and its applications in dentistry.

This course will be presented in 2 parts. Part one is January 28, 29 and involves didactic material and hands-on data processing.

The second part will be an individualized (by appointment) half-day of clinical hands-on at the Faculty of Dentistry..

The course content will include reviews of

  1. The biological effects of ionizing radiation
  2. Radiation dosimetry
  3. The appearances of normal anatomy
  4. Image interpretation of oral and maxillofacial pathoses
    1. dental anomalies
    2. Inflammatory lesions
    3. Trauma to the teeth and maxillofacial area
    4. Cysts- and cyst-like lesions
    5. Benign tumours of the jaws
    6. Dysplastic bone lesions of the jaws
    7. Malignant tumours of the jaws
    8. Dental implant assessments
    9. Temporomandibular joint abnormalities
  5. Reporting of images
  6. The appearances of normal anatomy

As well, each participant will gain experience in patient positioning and image reconstruction.


In order to complete this course, the enrollee must attain at least 60% in each ofi) a 2 hour short-answer and multiple choice examination; and ii) a 1 hour practical and written examination where participants will be asked to identify and report on 2 small field-of-view cbCT volumes.

Currently in the Province of Ontario it is not possible for dentists to be issued a permit to operate a cone beam CE machine. Legislation has been drafted that includes educational requirements that will qualify dentists to receive the necessary permit. Successful completion of this course will meet the educational requirements of the legislation to qualify dentists to operate a small field-of-view cone beam CT machine in the province of Ontario. The legislation is expected to be passed in the spring of 2011.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Two weeks prior to course date – 100% refund. One week prior to course date – 50% refund. There is no refund for cancellations after one week prior to course date.

Biography

Dr. Ernest Lam is an Associate Professor, Head of the Discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Program Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Graduate Program at the University of Toronto. After completing his BSc, DMD and MSc degrees at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Lam spent 2 years in private dental practice in Vancouver before enrolling at the University of Iowa where he completed specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a PhD in Radiation Biology. Dr. Lam is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a past-president of that organization, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a past chief-examiner.
